As a teen struggling with a view of God as punishing and blessing, I had two prevailing thoughts about God: anger and fear. When I was introduced to Christian Science, I did not expect to find solutions to those struggles in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , but I was intrigued by the ideas that the book was a key to understanding the Bible (which I had grown up reading) and that it explained a divine Science of healing. It seemed reasonable to me that if something is actually a science, then any honest student can learn the rules, apply them, and find predictable results.

From an early age, I witnessed the undeniable power of Christian Science healing. One of my first experiences—instantaneously healing a close family friend of smoking—awakened in me a deep desire to help others through the practice of spiritual healing.

Growing up in London I attended Sunday School and joined The Mother Church as a teenager. After graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in engineering, I initially pursued a career in music.

When I was a teenager, my family moved to a small West Texas town. There, I met a family who were students of Christian Science.

From childhood, I found comfort in the Bible. My family heavily relied on drugs, and I felt their side effects made my mother a different person.

It was in college that I first learned the importance of being more consistent in accepting spiritual harmony as the only reality. It was a modest step of spiritualizing thought, and one that I’ve had to relearn at times.  But it brought more healing into my life, and led to my entering the full-time public practice of Christian Science after I graduated. Since becoming a teacher of Christian Science, I have grown to appreciate even more the loving demands on all of us to grow spiritually, to love God and our fellow man, and to demonstrate the truth of Christian Science in healing.  Over the years I have worked for The Mother Church at different times: as a Regional Assistant talking with Christian Science college organizations in the Midwest; as a staff editor for the Christian Science Journal and Sentinel; as Assistant Manager of Practitioners and Nursing Activities, and then Manager of Practitioner Activities. Most recently I was Editor of the Christian Science Journal, Sentinel, and Herald.

My most enduring memory following a near-fatal accident is of God assuring me that He was/is my very life. Trapped in my car, I was passing in and out of consciousness.

As a child and young adult growing up in St. Louis, I felt life was a mystery; the future was unknown and the present a string of random events.

In high school I struggled with a painful disease that examining physicians said had no cure. Through Christian Science I was healed within two weeks.

Occasional visits to a Christian Science Sunday school when I was a child had shown me the practicality of its teachings. Attending a Christian Science lecture was a turning point, and some of the ideas shared brought my first demonstration of healing during exams a month later.
