Teachers of Christian Science are experienced healers
A Christian Science teacher is authorized to teach a Christian Science Primary class once a year. All authorized teachers of Christian Science are Christian Science practitioners. From their study of Christian Science, they help their students and others see and experience the presence and reality of God’s goodness and power through practical spiritual healing.
Primary class instruction covers the practical theology of Christian Science. In this class the teacher will help you deepen your understanding of God and your relationship to God, and explain how to practice Christianly scientific healing. They also hold a yearly, one-day meeting with the students who have already taken their annual class (this group is called an “association”). Any teacher would be happy to talk with you.
A 12-day, in-person course dedicated to prayer and learning about God
The purpose of Primary class is to expand and strengthen what you are already learning and practicing from your study of Christian Science. People are generally ready for class instruction when they’ve been regularly studying the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and want to learn more.
What to expect from class instruction
Dedicated time and focus:
During the 12 days, you’re removing yourself from the distractions of day-to-day life.
Your focus is on dedicated prayer, study, and learning about God.
The commitment and focus required means that class is in person. It’s not something you can do remotely.
Consistent curriculum:
The curriculum of class instruction is always the same. Classes are taught from the chapter “Recapitulation” in Science and Health.
Students work with the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy to support their study and preparation during the class.
Association membership after the class:
Students become members of an association with others who have taken class instruction from the same teacher.
The association meets annually, and the teacher conducts the meeting to support continuing spiritual growth and progress.
How do I start the process?
Explore guidance in the Church Manual:
Read Articles XXVI and XXVII from the Manual to see what Mary Baker Eddy wrote about teaching and class instruction.
Talk with an authorized teacher of Christian Science:
If you’re thinking about taking class instruction, the best way to start is to talk with a teacher.
Talking to a teacher doesn’t commit you to taking the class with them.
There are teachers all over the world, and you can find a list of them in Find a teacher. You’ll find contact information, basic biographical information, when and where they teach, and when and where they hold their association meetings. You can also search for them in the Christian Science Directory.
Application process and fees:
Once you find a teacher, they will guide you through the application process and explain any requirements or logistics about dates, location, and format.
The tuition for class instruction is set at $100.
