Church

A safe, supportive space to grow in your relationship to God

Learning how to build a relationship to God is an individual and unique journey. Christian Scientists have found church to be essential in advancing and growing spiritually. Christian Science church services provide a quiet, prayerful space where you can listen to a sermon directly from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Participate in a community that supports your spiritual growth

Christ Jesus expected his followers to love their neighbors. Church allows us to practice that teaching. Our love for one another can be expressed through caring for each other, learning from each other, and supporting each other’s spiritual growth. Church is a community where all are welcome.

Bringing healing to our communities

Ministering to the local community through prayer and healing is a key element of a Christian Science church. Christian Scientists believe prayer to be effective in addressing community needs. Participating in church helps our prayers become more expansive. There is plenty of demand for healing in the world. Christian Science churches aim to answer that call.

How Christian Science churches are governed—local and global

There is no ordained clergy in Christian Science, and its church organization differs from traditional hierarchical denominations. The Christian Science Church has two distinct, but complementary, forms:

  • The Mother Church, also known as The First Church of Christ, Scientist: Located in Boston, Massachusetts, it is the central and founding church of the Christian Science denomination and supports its global mission. Its activities are carried out by officers, including a Board of Directors, whose responsibilities are defined by the Church’s governing document, the Manual of The Mother Church, written by Mary Baker Eddy.

  • Branch Churches of Christ, Scientist: Each branch is governed democratically by its members. Local churches are branches of The Mother Church, and are affiliated by listing in the Christian Science Directory.

Vision for church

Each Christian Science church around the world strives to express the spiritual ideal in a way that uplifts humanity and brings healing to our communities. The spiritual ideal is defined as:

CHURCH. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.

The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick.

– Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 583:12–19
