Occasional visits to a Christian Science Sunday school when I was a child had shown me the practicality of its teachings. Attending a Christian Science lecture was a turning point, and some of the ideas shared brought my first demonstration of healing during exams a month later.

Growing up in London I attended Sunday School and joined The Mother Church as a teenager. After graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in engineering, I initially pursued a career in music.

I was raised in the suburbs of Chicago, and enjoyed a very happy upbringing. I credit my parents, through their practice and understanding of Christian Science, with instilling in me a love for God and church.

Melanie's calendar is full for the 2025-2026 lecture season.Two influences that Melanie will never forget were the Christian Science Sunday School and a mom who turned to prayer and encouraged her to do the same. These influences showed her something of the reliability of God and spiritual inspiration, and trusting this helped her find her way growing up.

The hunger for all things true has been the heart of my search, quest, and practice of Christian Science healing. I have found no other teaching that gets to the crux of it:  Why Christ Jesus was so confident that we too could and would follow in his footsteps.

Attending Christian Science Sunday School as a child, I loved what I learned there of God—He’s everywhere, always Love, and All. But going out into the “cold, cruel world,” I couldn’t reconcile what I was seeing with a God who is Love. Putting my Bible and Science and Health on the shelf, I forged ahead, just trying to live a moral, meaningful life. I married, had children, was happy, but missing was a depth to life.  Science and Health beckoned to me. Opening it, I saw my grandmother’s note inside: “Judith Ann—Read this.  You owe it to yourself.” I did, for the first time. When I came to “The calm, strong currents of true spirituality.

In 1923 my grandfather was given a copy of Science and Health, and through reading it, healed his five-year-old son (my father) of terminal cancer and polio, whose case had been given up by five physicians. I felt a natural affinity for Christian Science as a young child, and early developed a desire to heal.

This talk discusses Christian Science and how it explains the practical application of Jesus’ teachings in daily life, for anyone, including through physical healing. Alexandre explores examples from the Bible and shares personal testimonies of healing, all pointing to the fact that God is not far off, but here and now.

I grew up in Spain. My youth was very normal, with a focus on music.

I was a teenager when Christian Science entered my life, a woman handed me her unwanted periodicals. I read them and was intrigued by the way God was defined as impartial, all-inclusive Love. I felt that God was leading my life in a new direction.
