Finding freedom from oppressive circumstances can seem impossible. However, freedom, found through a spiritual perspective, is available to everyone–in every situation.

At an early age I loved reading the Bible for its inspiring accounts of healing. I found it comforting, strengthening and thought-provoking.

Although I was reared in Christian Science, I really didn’t understand its teachings until after I was married. One of my first misconceptions was that I could solve problems by my own supreme human effort. However, by turning to God alone and denying human will, my daughter was healed of severe intestinal problems, I was healed of wrong character traits, and I became a more content and honest person.

After graduating from college and law school, I joined the United States Justice Department as a trial lawyer in the Antitrust Division and then as a special Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuting criminal cases from indictment to jury trial to sentencing. From the beginning of my legal career, whenever I went on my own ambition and talents, I would falter.

This is the UK title for How spiritual perception brings healing. How can we move away from fear, sickness, and strife into something better? Prayer, as it’s explained through the lens of Christian Science, is a tool for bringing a different viewpoint, and ultimately healing, to any situation.

Occasional visits to a Christian Science Sunday school when I was a child had shown me the practicality of its teachings. Attending a Christian Science lecture was a turning point, and some of the ideas shared brought my first demonstration of healing during exams a month later.

The problems we face can seem to shatter our hopes and dreams. But Christian Science shows that understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ is able to change the course of our lives for the better.
