After graduating from college and law school, I joined the United States Justice Department as a trial lawyer in the Antitrust Division and then as a special Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuting criminal cases from indictment to jury trial to sentencing. From the beginning of my legal career, whenever I went on my own ambition and talents, I would falter.

This is the UK title for How spiritual perception brings healing. How can we move away from fear, sickness, and strife into something better? Prayer, as it’s explained through the lens of Christian Science, is a tool for bringing a different viewpoint, and ultimately healing, to any situation.

Occasional visits to a Christian Science Sunday school when I was a child had shown me the practicality of its teachings. Attending a Christian Science lecture was a turning point, and some of the ideas shared brought my first demonstration of healing during exams a month later.

The problems we face can seem to shatter our hopes and dreams. But Christian Science shows that understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ is able to change the course of our lives for the better.

Christian Science has taken care of my family’s needs for five generations. I used to listen to my German grandmother tell me how God had protected family members during both world wars. These accounts of protection from bombs and Nazi interrogations had the same feeling of authenticity as the Bible accounts of deliverance from lions’ dens and fiery furnaces. Because of that, the Bible always felt approachable to me. Growing up in Colorado, loving hiking and skiing and the mountains, it always felt completely natural to be talking to God and listening for His presence.

Christian Science has always been most precious to me. I was raised in it, and I can honestly say there was never a time when I didn't think of myself as a Christian Scientist.

Christian Science found me while I was just a young person. I had been fairly content with life, but my experiences and something within were showing me that life had a bigger significance than what appeared.

Growing up, Christian Science was my lifeline. I wasn't super tied in to church, but I had a concrete feeling there was a source I could turn to for comfort, inspiration, and direction: God.
