Awful poverty in a polygamous family--these words describe well the condition in which I first became aware of my existence in the remote countryside of South-Eastern Togo, West Africa, where I was born. Traditional animism, worship of and belief in many spirits, nurtured my heathen early education.

 As a child, I was told that my great-great-great-grandmother became a Christian Science practitioner after experiencing healing while reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. However, I certainly remember my grandfather - also a Christian Science practitioner - whom I loved immensely and could always turn to for help.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a student of Christian Science. As a young kid I enjoyed listening to Bible stories in Sunday School.

Christian Science came into my family when Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy healed two of my great grandmothers of incurable diseases. Faithful teachers in Sunday School taught me to love the Bible and to practice its teachings.

Concern for public health and safety is something that all responsible people share—including Christian Scientists.

I grew up in a family in which Christian Science was at the heart. I deeply value the security I have always felt from knowing that God is our Father-Mother Love, an ever-present help, and that in any situation we can find the inspiration and spiritual understanding that we need in the Bible and  Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

As a little girl I learned that God is Love. During my occasional sleepless nights, my mom would encourage me to "catch some angels." In the Christian Science Sunday school I had learned Mary Baker Eddy's definition of angels: "God's thoughts passing to man;...the inspiration of goodness...counteracting all evil" ( Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.

When I took Christian Science Primary class instruction in my twenties, I found that the teachings were relevant to me as a tertiary student, young wife, mother of four children­, traveller and thinker. They also enhanced and steadied my life and work in Australia, England and Malaysia. Today, living in an environment of cultural, political, health and climate challenges, I find reassurance in this counsel from Mary Baker Eddy: ‘We must look deep into realism instead of accepting only the outward sense of things’ ( Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures ).

Christian Science was introduced to my family by my grandfather as a result of his complete healing of severe head injuries. Many healings in our family and a happy Sunday School experience followed.

I am a South African and come from a long line of family committed to the rights of man – based on a spiritual foundation. Throughout my life I have experienced evidence of God’s protecting and healing power in that I never missed a day of my schooling or business career due to illness. I was able to assist my fellow pupils and corporate colleagues to experience the presence of the Christ in many different situations.
