As a teen struggling with a view of God as punishing and blessing, I had two prevailing thoughts about God: anger and fear. When I was introduced to Christian Science, I did not expect to find solutions to those struggles in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , but I was intrigued by the ideas that the book was a key to understanding the Bible (which I had grown up reading) and that it explained a divine Science of healing. It seemed reasonable to me that if something is actually a science, then any honest student can learn the rules, apply them, and find predictable results.

As a teenager, I found myself ill and far from home. The night before I was taken for a medical exam, I stayed awake pondering a single question with all my heart: “What does it mean to be a Christian Scientist?” As dawn began to break, the answer came: “To follow the teachings and example of Christ Jesus,” including the commands to “heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons.” This answer brought an assurance of God’s love and healing presence, and a deep yearning to be a more dedicated follower of Christ.

I found Christian Science in college and immediately knew I had found the Truth. The first thing I did was read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and I was amazed to find articulated what I’d always felt must be true.

Occasional visits to a Christian Science Sunday school when I was a child had shown me the practicality of its teachings. Attending a Christian Science lecture was a turning point, and some of the ideas shared brought my first demonstration of healing during exams a month later.
