Records Management Internship

Intern with the Records Management team at The Mary Baker Eddy Library and help support the history and mission of The First Church of Christ, Scientist (TFCCS) by engaging with the organizational records of The Mother Church. If you are thinking about a career in archival or records management, this internship is designed for you!

The Office of Records Management (ORM) is responsible for managing the lifecycle of documents created in the course of business at TFCCS. This process includes ensuring that all documents are kept as long as needed for legal or business reasons, as well as preserving documents of historical value.

As an intern you will be exposed to a wide range of archival and records management tasks, from processing records and collections to assisting with an ongoing project to assess and digitize recordings from TFCCS’s collection of analog media. You will be introduced to the church’s records management database (M-Files) and digital preservation system (Preservica). You’ll also learn the proper procedures for processing archival collections, including the use and implementation of metadata and appropriate practices for records handling and storage. 

At the completion of the internship, you will have helped to accurately and appropriately describe and preserve business records for TFCCS employees and future researchers.

Opportunities include:

  • Learning about enterprise content management systems

  • Learning about digital preservation systems

  • Learning archival and records management principles and best practices

  • Supporting a large-scale records management project with research and archival processing

  • Participating in meetings with members of the ORM & Special Collections team to learn more about ongoing records management and archival projects

There is also a potential opportunity to help process a large collection containing documents and recordings in Japanese.

Desired qualifications:

This position is best suited to an individual who is:

  • Well-organized

  • Known for careful orderliness and attention to detail

  • Comfortable with data entry

  • Interested in the post-1910 history of TFCCS, management of documents, and the digital preservation of recordings

  • Able to troubleshoot and think creatively about meeting unique expectations

  • Comfortable lifting up to 30 pounds

Program Dates: May 20 - August 2, 2024

Compensation: Interns receive a $400/week living stipend, as well as housing near The Mother Church. They will also receive a $900 grant upon completion of the internship. These payments are taxable benefits.
