Drawing from Jesus’ teachings in the Bible, as well as personal experiences practicing Christian Science, Emra illustrates how prayer can bring tangible healing and transformation.

When I was a freshman at Dartmouth College, I had a nagging desire to take the winter semester off and read Mary Baker Eddy's book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, from cover to cover. I felt a deep conviction that the world needed a spiritual revolution and that the contents of this book offered the catalyst.

I have always had a love of healing in Christian Science. My first family stories were of how my grandfather’s immediate conviction of the Science of the Christ healed my uncles and aunts in their moments of great need.

The work of Jesus and the reports of healing in the Bible have been an inspiration to me for as long as I can remember. I was first introduced to Christian Science as a teenager and I witnessed wonderful healings through Christian Science.

Christian Science has taken care of my family’s needs for five generations. I used to listen to my German grandmother tell me how God had protected family members during both world wars. These accounts of protection from bombs and Nazi interrogations had the same feeling of authenticity as the Bible accounts of deliverance from lions’ dens and fiery furnaces. Because of that, the Bible always felt approachable to me. Growing up in Colorado, loving hiking and skiing and the mountains, it always felt completely natural to be talking to God and listening for His presence.

As a small child, I always felt at home in church. The more I learned about Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy, the more they became close friends, whose teachings showed me how God’s love and tender care heal and protect me, and others, from illness and danger. Growing up, I had powerful proof that Christian Science heals, and is reliable and transformative. These healings, including a diagnosed case of strep throat, inspired me to help others realize the healing power that comes from an understanding of God as infinite, divine Principle, Love.

  My parents found Christian Science when I was eight, and we experienced our mother’s healing of cancer, as well as many other healings of serious diseases over the years. I was always curious to know how prayer worked, especially after I was healed of yellow fever.

It was through the kindness of a neighbor, who drove my sister and me to Sunday School every week, that I was introduced to Christian Science and had a healing that changed my life. Neither of my parents were Christian Scientists, and I’d been born with a disfiguring skin condition.
