Preparing for membership

Becoming a member of any group of people working together toward a common goal is a commitment—one that brings you into a community of like-minded people.

Membership in The Mother Church is so much more. You are joining a global community that fills you spiritually, blessing you, your family and friends, and the world.

You may be considering this step because you appreciate the Christ Science discovered by Mary Baker Eddy. You may see the world hungering for a life that truly satisfies—and you may want to find it for yourself and help others find it, too. Likely you have witnessed the healing effects of Christian Science—and maybe experienced healing for yourself or healed others.

In short, you believe that the freedom and joy that comes from a stronger spiritual understanding of God satisfy as nothing else can. And you want to join with others who feel the same way. We want to help!

The Manual of The Mother Church (pp. 34–35) outlines the qualifications for membership:

Church Membership

Article IV

Mary Baker Eddy. The Bible, together with Science and Health and other works by Mrs. Eddy, shall be his only textbooks for self-instruction in Christian Science, and for teaching and practising metaphysical healing.

Free from Other Denominations. Sect. 2. This Church will receive a member of another Church of Christ, Scientist, but not a church member from a different denomination until that membership is dissolved.

Children when Twelve Years Old. Sect. 3. Children who have arrived at the age of twelve years, who are approved, and whose applications are countersigned by one of Mrs. Eddy’s loyal students, by a Director, or by a student of the Board of Education, may be admitted to membership with The Mother Church.
