Literature Support Program

We want to help

The Literature Support Program offers assistance to anyone who is unable to purchase subscriptions or certain products due to a present financial need. Subscriptions and certain products are offered for free to those who qualify, although program participants are invited to make an optional payment of USD $1.

The following factors qualify as financial hardship:

  1. Loss of employment

  2. Death in the family of wage earner

  3. Accident affecting personal or family health

  4. Health care expenses exceeding insurance coverage

  5. Natural disaster 

  6. Loss of a primary source of family income

  7. Non-emergency circumstances in which one depends on any type of government assistance

  8. Other financial hardship

The following products and subscriptions are available:

  • One free copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and/or the Holy Bible: King James Version (or the equivalent translation in French, German, Portuguese, or Spanish, if available)

  • 6-month subscriptions* to the following:

    • One of: JSH-Online or individual print subscriptions to The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science

    • One of: Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons Citation, Full-Text, CD, or Digital Edition

    • One of: The Christian Science Monitor Daily or Daily/Print Bundle

    • Concord, A Christian Science Study Resource

*Subscriptions are eligible for renewal under the Program (subject to qualification) up to a maximum term of 2 years (cumulative).

What translations of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy are available?

You can request a one-time free copy of Science and Health translated into French, German, Portuguese, or Spanish.


What translations of the Bible are available?

The King James Version and the corresponding translations primarily quoted in the French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish translations of Science and Health are the only Bibles offered at this time.


Can I request books other than the Bible or Science and Health?

At this time, the Holy Bible: King James Version and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy are the only two books included in this Program.


Can I request 6-month subscriptions to multiple products?

Yes, you have the opportunity to apply for any of the following 6-month subscriptions:

  • One of: JSH-Online or individual print subscriptions to The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science

  • One of: Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons Citation, Full-Text, CD, or Digital Edition

  • One of: The Christian Science Monitor Daily or Daily/Print Bundle

What constitutes “other financial hardship”?

Other financial hardship may include anything that prevents you from having the financial means to subscribe to or purchase our products. All requests will be thoughtfully and prayerfully considered.


Will I need to share details or documentation about my financial situation?

A Customer Service Representative will conduct a brief interview with each applicant to determine whether he or she meets one of the eligibility criteria above, but no documentation is required.


What personal information will I have to share?

Our Customer Service team will need information to identify your subscription like your name, address, subscription account number(s), phone number, and email address (if you have one). If you are restarting a canceled digital subscription, the representative will also need your credit card information. For security reasons, we cannot accept credit card information via email. Please call Customer Service if you think you may need to share your credit card information.


I already canceled but want to take advantage of this—how do I do that?

What happens to my subscription after the 6-month extension?

Automatic Renewal Subscriptions
After the 6-month extension ends, your subscription payments will resume according to the auto-renewal price and frequency selected at the time of purchase, subject to any subsequent changes or updates.

Non-Automatic Renewal Subscriptions
Subscriptions that are not enrolled in automatic renewal will end six months after the originally-scheduled subscription end date. Subscribers will receive renewal reminders with an invitation to renew their subscription prior to the expiration date. Previously canceled subscriptions not on automatic renewal will be sent renewal reminders prior to the end of the extension period.

Program Extensions
Program participants still experiencing financial hardship are eligible to renew subscriptions (subject to qualification) up to a maximum term of 2 cumulative years. Please contact our Customer Service team if you feel you need to extend your subscription(s) after 6 months.


When will my credit card be charged again?

If your subscription is on auto-renewal, your credit card will again be charged automatically after the 6-month extension is complete at the same frequency it was being charged before enrolling in the Program. For new subscribers, your card will be charged in accordance with the product chosen when enrolling in the Program.


I subscribe but am not currently set up on auto-renewal; can my subscription still be extended?

Yes, your subscription can be extended for 6 months. We will send you normal renewal notices via mail, and you can decide if you'd like to renew at that time.


Is the subscription I gifted to someone eligible for the benevolence program?

Gift subscriptions are not included in the Program, but gift recipients are welcome to apply.


Can I participate without contacting customer service?

Not at this time. Participation in the Program requires contacting customer service by phone.


Do you need my credit card information?

If you have an active subscription set to auto-renewal, or a subscription to a print magazine, we do not need your credit card information. However, if you are restarting a canceled digital subscription, the Customer Service representative will need your credit card information. For security reasons, we cannot accept credit card information via email. Please call Customer Service if you think you may need to provide your credit card information.


Are other discounted rates available?

We are not offering other discounted rates under this Program.


How soon could I begin this program?

Enrollment is immediate. Please feel free to contact us at any time.


When will the program end?

There is no scheduled end date for the Program.

Can I donate to this program?

Donations directly in support of this program are not supported at this time, but general donations can be made by contributing to the General Fund listed on our Giving website (click the blue "Donate" button).
