The Mother Church and Christian Science Publishing Society's financial and business management activities are centralized within the Treasurer's Office. Within this office are a broad array of financial functions. The objective of this position is to give the intern hands-on experience in these different areas and learn how they serve the Church organization and the Christian Science movement as a whole. Through the internship experience, the intern will also gain a deeper understanding of the financial structure of the Church, the Church’s history, and its healing mission.
Project opportunities:
Assist Procurement and Contract Specialist with new Contract Lifecycle Management project. Assist in data integrity and conversion to this new CLM system.
Work with Financial Planning and Analysis team on systems automation, financial report preparation, and briefings for management.
Assist in the preparation of the quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors on investments.
Gain experience analyzing audited financial statements as part of a comprehensive investment fee report to be reviewed by the Finance Committee of the Church.
Assist Benefits and Payroll team with the upgrade of the employee time management system and the annual benefit programs renewal preparation.
Help develop fun teambuilding and enrichment activities for the office.
Overview activities:
Introductory meetings with each of the primary functions of the Treasurer’s Office including Investments, Philanthropy (fundraising), Estates and Trusts (donations received through wills and trusts), Benevolence (grant making), Accounting, Audit (internal and external), Tax and Compliance, Procurement (supplies and contracts), Accounts Payable/Receivable, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Benefits and Payroll.
Special Projects:
Assist with special projects and reporting within the internal and external audit, tax and compliance areas.
Assist in the preparation of tax filings, including gathering supporting documents, organizing data for federal, state, and local returns, performing calculations, and researching questions. Support work to review, track, and process various tax notices received by the Church.
Assist in the preparation of the quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors on investments.
Gain experience analyzing audited financial statements of the investment managers of the Church’s investment portfolio to determine the amount of fees charged by each manager. Learn how to compare portfolio level fees to industry averages. Draft a report to be reviewed by the Finance Committee of the Church.
Assist various areas of the Treasurer’s Office in a variety of processes and projects.
