Kevin G Graunke CSB

When my parents returned from Primary class, it was obvious they’d had a life-changing experience. It kindled a spiritual light whose brightness has illumined, blessed and sustained my marriage, family and career. It led my wife and me to take Primary class together two years later, and today shines actively at the heart of my healing practice, teaching and service to church. My early professional work in business-to-business advertising was rewarding, but that Christ-impelled glow was steadily becoming my own “heart burning within me”— a deepening desire to serve God and man in a much more substantial way.

The Bible

The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is the foundation for the theology and practice of Christian Science. For Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Science flowed out of a new understanding of the Bible, which illumined the divine laws behind spiritual healing.

My family was introduced to Christian Science as a result of my great Uncle being healed of a debilitating disease. Growing up I had a great desire to travel and an early heartfelt desire to help others; so after training in childcare I did some voluntary work for Save the Children Fund, with Tibetan refugees in northern India.

My parents found Christian Science before I was ten, and our family had healings of an ulcer, smoking, and a serious foot wound in the first year.  More followed, and so did my interest in all things Science—through Sunday School, then college.  It was a yearning to understand the “how” as well as the “what” that then led to class instruction in London, and a desire for the public practice.  After a stint in graduate school for theatre, I knew it wasn’t in me to pursue acting.  Instead, prayer opened the way for tour-guiding at The Mother Church and selling advertising for The Christian Science Monitor , followed by a decade of editorial work on The Christian Science Journal, Sentinel , and Heralds . I began receiving requests for help through prayer as I became active in a branch church, and started writing for the periodicals. The Boston area became my home, and I later worked in the Committee on Publication, on Mother Church Annual Meetings, Mother Church Local Activities, The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and Reading Room Communications, as well as traveling for the Church. A part-time summer job had morphed into 25 years of spiritual adventure! I began Journal -advertising in 2005 and by 2009, felt God-assigned to Buffalo, New York, near where I had been born. Several months later came Normal class. Class instruction and Association are held in this storied city where Christian Science has had a presence for more than 120 years. And the best is on the horizon!

Christian Science and community service were strong influences in my home growing up.  I found fulfilling ways to help disadvantaged people over the years, but in college I became convinced that the best way to accomplish lasting justice and peace was Jesus’ path of breaking through the illusion of evil and many minds to the perfection of God’s spiritual universe.  I wanted to devote myself to Christian Science practice, but wasn’t sure how to launch.  My next step was to become a Christian Science nurse.  Through nursing I learned healing involved love and commitment to spiritual growth.  It was challenging and satisfying work.  I also grew through active involvement in church, and in 1981 became a full-time Christian Science practitioner, then a public lecturer and writer for church periodicals.  I so appreciate Church as a structure for spiritual development. My Christian Science teacher encouraged me to be willing to teach others if I were needed in that role.  When I took this step in 1991, I found teaching class was a lot like teaching Sunday School.  I love discovering with students how to read Science and Health and the Bible with always deeper spiritual insight, to make their truths practical in healing, and depend on them as guides.  It’s also wonderful to continue growing with students through individual contact and yearly Association meetings.  Christian Science healing and teaching is the most joyful work I can imagine.  Class is a great step in taking your place as a healer.
