A friend who is not a Christian Scientist contacted me today to say that one of her dogs (whio is my personal favorite) seems to be suffering and near death. I have been giving him a CS treatment and would appreciate any thoughts others would like to share with me.

My mother, who was a Scientist, used to say that animals are very pure clear expressions of love and loyalty and I have been focusing today on all the spiritual qualities that this little animal friend, Hunter, has always expressed over the years that I have known him, and holding to his identify as an idea of God that expresses changeless Life and Love. I have a feeling that I need to be praying about agelessness for both my friend and myself as well as Hunter to see a healing in this case.

Animals can bring a profound purity to understanding qualities of God. Hunter is the expression of Life, of all action and activity which proceeds from Spirit, God.
Spirit is alive with vivaciousness and energy, and those same qualities of Spirit belong to Hunter. All the systems of Divine Mind operate harmoniously, they
are part of the Allness of God. Animals so beautifully bring God first hand to our experience through their expression of affection, loyalty, strength, beauty, grandeur, purity, obedience and faith. These are active life renewing qualities.
Your loving and fearless efforts on behalf of your friend are sure to bring peace
and freedom.

Thank you, Harley, for these beautiful insights. It means so much to me to know that we are a community that spans the whole world and can support each other by sharing inspiration in this forum.

I am posting some quotes from the Bible and S&H and ideas from articles in the periodicals (especially from an interview with Bill Moody on Katrina) that I found in working on this CS treatment for Hunter, in the hopes that they may be helpful to others. I was also reminded over the past 24 hours that I have been working on this, as MBE said, how important it is to "stand porter at the door of thought" ready at all times to replace any fear with trust, faith, and confidence in God.

"Mind's infinite ideas run and disport themselves." (S&H, p. 514, 7-8)

91st Psalm, verse 1: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."

Psalm 46: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Rise in the strength of the Spirit....

"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear." There is a restorative power in God's love....

The power of prayer is sufficient to meet any human need...Love is meeting the human need right now.

We live and move and have our being in God and nothing changes there. Everything is always peaceful and perfect.

23rd Psalm as modified by MBE: "I will dwell in the house (the consciousness) of Love forever."

Life goes on in God, reflecting God, and the good that people and animals have done and shared with us here in this experience will continue to bless us. They are still the loved expressions of God. They exist. There's never a moment when God stops loving them, or when he stops caring for them, or stops giving them that divine Life that goes on forever.

Life is an ongoing expression of divinity that doesn't begin in this human experience and doesn't end with it.

thank-you both for your postings and lovely thoughts. I am also praying for my sweet dog who seems to be ill and not eating. I will pray for Hunter and I feel so much stronger after reading your thoughts. I am working with the thought that divine love always has met and always will met every need. I am having issues with fear and I keep thinking that God is the sustainer and never fails his creation. God nourishes our sweet pets and us with life, joy and vitality. I thank God for these wonderful pets.

I have always loved "The passing of the Sea Gull" that vividly and gently illustrates the eternal and imortal nature of Life and Life's expression. It is in the "Anthology of Classic Articles" recently published and in Reading Rooms!

My wife and I last Saturday went through the passing of a cat that has been part of our family for the past 10 years. We both worked steadfastly. The work was to recognize God's perfect creation as already complete and intact, not to try to fix matter.

One thing I learned from my work is that it is equally important to understand that no part of me can die or be lost. Mrs. Eddy reminds us that man survives the body, and we realized that we survived the human loss of the beautiful, warm companion. Even after the passing I must properly address that false suggestion.

I have done much praying for animals.
One really important point is that it is much like praying for young children, in which, as Mrs. Eddy says, we need to take the parents thought into account.

The owners are like parents and the pets like little kids. The owner's worry and fear need to be handled. Please do this!! I have had healings from just this alone, and it certainly is always important to include.

Also, there is a belief that animals are psychically tuned in to their owners. Realize that animals are not channels for human thought, but are direct expressions of an all-good God.

Regards,
Lora

Ayer, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I also find that the purity and innocence of the pets that we are close to often holds a mirror up that makes us realize that we have to heal ourselves of the thoughts we are seeing projected on to them. In the case of me and my friend, what we need to deal with is the insidious mesmerism of world beliefs of aging that masquerade as our own thoughts and also are trying to attach to our dogfriend Hunter. Perhaps this is one of the gifts that our animal friends bring to us--making it possible for us to recognize and face fears that we were not aware that we were harboring.

Thanks for letting us walk through this healing with you, Lindyhop. It’s so natural for animals to respond to the Science of Christ. In the book, Mary Baker Eddy: Christian Healer, I was delighted to discover that Mrs. Eddy had pets at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College . The book relates two healings of her pets – a goldfish that had died, and a bird whose tiny leg had been broken. Both were quickly healed.

Christian Science has healed our family pets and farm animals on many occasions, so I am not surprised to hear of Lindyhop’s success in restoring his “patient”.

Perhaps the most challenging condition we met along this line was when our farm dog, George, who was restored to four-legged status after one of his forelegs had been accidentally severed just below the knee joint.

Up to that time, I had always been confident that Christian Science could heal anything, but this one gave me pause. My husband felt the veterinarian would just consider it a done deal – i.e., that nothing could be done. So I agreed to treat the situation in Science.

We hosed down the injured area with water and then joined the severed portion to the dog’s leg with a piece of wood and bandaging to keep it in place. No headway was made for a couple of days. In fact, the condition became quite alarming. But a testimony at church one evening helped me get on top of the situation. Two powerful passages in Science and Health destroyed my fear, and within a couple of days, the flesh regained a normal, healthy appearance.

We simply continued to hose down the area and freshen the bandage each day for about two weeks. Then the bandage was no longer needed. The dog began to use the injured leg occasionally, and within a month after the mishap he was jumping fences and running about normally without any sign of the mishap. He had never favored his leg in any way except during the first couple of weeks, when the bandage made it necessary for him to settle for 3-legged mobility.

This healing was accomplished entirely through Christian Science. No stitches or other veterinary services were employed at any time.

I’d composed the following before I got to Lindyhop’s last post indicating victory. Yay! But for others who may be wondering about pet care, here are some thoughts that may be helpful.

“All of God’s creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, and indestructible.” (Science and Health, p. 514) This is a wonderful basis for treating animals in Christian Science, as someone has already mentioned on this thread.

Not personal sense, but impartial Love will meet the needs of all our pets and working creatures if we will let it. It’s entirely natural for creatures to feel the touch of Love and respond to it. As manifestations of Spirit, pets, farm animals and creatures in the wild are all governed by the same impartial law of God. There is no health law, hygienic belief, longevity statistic, or veterinary theory that can prevent God’s creature-manifestations from “run[ning] and disport[ing] themselves” as they so love to do!

God’s ideas/creatures are never “about to die”. They live and move and have their being in Spirit. All of God’s creatures belong to Him/Her, and He is responsible for their well-being. Divine Love alone has formed and animated them as individual spiritual ideas. In Truth, there are neither corporeal mortals nor corporeal animals. They are in fact pure manifestations of divine intelligence, perfection and continuity.

There is nothing for any creature to suffer from. Since God is All-in-all, every creature's real substance is always vigorously and safely encircled IN God, not outside of Him. IN Spirit, not matter. IN the presence of all that is "harmless, useful, and indestructible."

I so appreciate reading all the truthful ideas and approaches to healing that have been shared. It seems I'm always praying for or about some animal in my life! You've shared some new thoughts that I will consider more deeply.

I always read Mrs. Eddy's answer to "What is man?", in Science and Health. If you'll notice, there is no reference to physical form in there. There are no "humans" mentioned, nor homo sapiens, etc. Part of the definition of Man in the glossary is, "The compound idea of infinite Spirit; ... the full representation of Mind. " Is there a suggestion, maybe, that Mind isn't fully expressed at times, in the form of animals?

God didn't just create humans, and then let a material world of animals and plants and matter grow up around them. God is the only cause and creator! Reading that long answer the question of man, and keeping in mind it's not about material distinctions, opens my eyes to "oneness" ... with all life! There is only One God, One Life, and one really good idea, man.

I agree, too with the person who suggested handling the thought of the "parents" or the owners. Reading this definition helps me do that too. Helps me get clear on who I am and who God is.

It's all thought, and the only thing that ever needs changing is thought. So, it's not about a dog or horse or bird or human. If we see accident, disease, heredity, etc., we need to correct that thought/belief, no matter who we see it on.
