Will the avatar feature ever be enabled?

Uploading a pic works. You could upload an avitar pic.

I can upload a photo to my user profile, but avatars, which appear under one's user name in every post, cannot be enabled. In the "edit avatar" section of my profile editing tools I get this:

Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.
[selection button]Do not use an avatar
Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.

There is no button to allow an avatar.

Avatars are nice because you can associate your name with a unique image, and personalize your posts. It can also make it easier to distinguish other members, particularly those with similar names.

Hi Jim,

Just a personal observation. I see this from both sides. I write on another internet discussion forum where practically everyone has avatars (including me!) but I choose to disable seeing them as I find them so distracting. There's often a huge sense of ego and personality that creeps in, with suggestive poses etc, though I'm not saying that would happen here.

I feel they not only could distract from these really helpful discussions on Christian Science but also give the moderators more work - would they have to ban those avatars they felt were not suitable, for instance? As it is, we're all on a level playing field - I'd rather keep it that way, even if it is more difficult to distinguish between individuals.
