Effects of burns immediately reversed

My first healing in Christian Science was very memorable and had a far-reaching effect on my life—one I could never have anticipated.

I’d been studying Christian Science for only a few months when one night I accidentally spilled scalding hot oil over one of my hands. I’d been in the middle of preparing dinner for a friend and deep-frying something on the stove.

The skin on my hand turned red and became very painful. I was afraid I might have a severe burn. Despite this, I immediately thought that this was an opportunity to apply what I’d been learning in Christian Science.

So I prayed, beginning with “the scientific statement of being” from Science and Health. It begins: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (Science and Health, p. 468).

This basic principle of Christian Science—that neither my hand nor any part of my physical body constituted my real substance, which was entirely spiritual—helped me regain my peace. Soon, the fear I’d felt completely left me, and there was no longer any pain or redness.

The friend I was preparing dinner for, who was not a Christian Scientist, witnessed the entire incident. She said that in all her life she’d never seen anything like it. She thought it was wonderful!

I’ve studied Christian Science for many years now, but just recently I was again reminded of this healing. While I was removing a saucepan from the electric stove, one of my fingers touched the hot burner. Within seconds the skin turned red, and a blister began to form. I recalled my first healing in Christian Science and thought to myself: The same truth that was present then is present now. I acknowledged that Spirit and all things spiritual alone are real. This truth helped me see that nothing about me could be burned or injured. Immediately after I’d recognized this, all discoloration, pain, and blistering disappeared. I was completely healed.

This reminded me of the following statement in Science and Health: “The divine Love, which made harmless the poisonous viper, which delivered men from the boiling oil, from the fiery furnace … can heal the sick in every age and triumph over sin and death” (Science and Health, p. 243).

Each of these healings was so natural, effortless, and meaningful in my growth Spiritward. Christian Science treatment truly is immediate and practical.
